There are so many ways to carry stuff on a bike, we’ve written a second blog about it! Here are some more options for you.
The basket
The humble basket on a bike is such a classic image, yet incredibly practical. Perfect for placing a handbag or a small rucksack into, there will be plenty of room for other things like a bike lock. The obvious downside with it being open is it is clearly not weatherproof and not every bike has been designed to take a basket
The Frame bag
A frame bag typically hangs off the top tube of the frame and in middle of the bike, which means a sleek, uninterrupted look. They come in varying sizes, depending on if you need to carry some items for the day, or some extra supplies for say the kids. The mounting position on the frame is unobtrusive so you should have no issues with interfering with your legs as you pedal.
Front Pannier
If you need to carry a serious amount of stuff, for example you’re going bike packing, you could resort to a front pannier. This is much like the rear pannier but this time the rack is mounted to the front forks of the bike and the bags then mount to it. This should definitely not be your first choice of bag option as the extra weight on the front can make the steering heavier and more difficult to ride. However, once you are used to it, it’s a great extra space to utilise.
The bar bag
Lastly the bar bag, which in recent times has become very popular. This is a bag that straps to the handle bars and hangs just below. They are popular partly because it is a very practical bag, with all your items within easy reach, but also because there is something about the look of a bike with a bar bag. Like with any bag mounted to the steering system, its best to keep the weight of the items inside to a minimum.
Your choice of bag will ultimately depend on the type and geometry of bike you own, and your own personal needs. If possible it’s also best to try bags on your bike before buying. Hopefully this comprehensive will help you dream up all the things you need to take with you on your next ride.
